Taika Waititi’s New Film: Boy

This is director Taika Waititi’s second feature film (after Eagle vs. Shark and TV’s Flight of the Conchords). It’s a semi-autobiographical look at his own growing up in Waihau Bay in western Bay of Plenty, New Zealand. Set in the 1980’s, Boy is a coming-of-age story about two Maori brothers, Boy and Rocky, who are trying to find their potential whilst living in the shadow of their larger-than-life father Alamein, played by Waititi himself.

Dinner for Schmucks starring Steve Carell (Brick killed someone!), of 40 YR OLD VIRGIN amongst many other rib-cracking ventures, nice guy Paul Rudd and farkin’ funny Zach Galifianakis. Directed by Jay Roach, it is a remake of the 1998 French black comedy film The Dinner Game.

As one of the gentlemen in NBA2K10 says, there are high percentage shots and there are 100% shots. With Michael Cera, Zach Galifinakis, Justin Long, and hottie Portia Doubleday, “Youth In Revolt” looks like a definite 100% shot. Can we even grasp the genius of this movie’s concept? An awkward teen, downtrodden by jocks and ignored by girls, creates an alternate personality to help him conquer his social demons. It’s kind of like an “Oh God, You Devil!” situation, except with just the devil. Am I gushing? You watch the trailer and decide for yourself.

As Robert Downey Jr continues his comeback success, he stars again in the sequel of the comic book adaptation of Iron Man as Tony Stark. If it’s anything like the first movie boasting good one liners, comic timing, gadgets galore and classic action scenes then we’re in for a treat. As we all know, action sequels don’t always follow through (X-Men and Die Hard being the exceptions) and looking at the trailer it’s hard to see if this will be the case. Mickey Rourke as villain Whiplash looks like it will play out interestingly, can Iron Man redeem to fallen actors?

Based on the short film by Tim Burton & Shane Acker, 9 is set in a post apocalyptic world inherited by a bunch of stitchpunks. Stitchpunks are kind of like plushies, the characters of the Playstation game Little Big Planet are good examples.

9 (Elijah Wood) is also the name of the lead character who alongside 2 (Martin Landau) & 7 (Jennifer Connelly) are left the sole inhabitants of our world. The visual look of the film is reminiscent of Tim Burton and french features such as The City of Lost Children. Now out in cinemas, this is a definite must-see.
