Now based in Beijing, accomplished photographer Jasper James manages to squeeze in some beautiful shoots for his people and places series, amongst some big name client work. I love this series of photos of silhouettes by skyscraper windows. It reminds me of a close friend’s artwork titled ‘together alone’, depicting the solitude we can feel in such overcrowded, non-communicative societies.

Olivia starts the creative process from sourcing the materials to building the objects and finally photographing them. She is an artist that loves her work it shows through these entertaining photographs.

Anton Tang Adds Life

I like when photographers influence perspective to make small look big and inanimate look alive. By playing with focus, framing and tilt-shift you can also make big look small and the alive look inanimate.

Here photographer Anton Tang makes small look big at the same time bringing life to his subjects.

Here’s a great example of what I mean when I refer to making big look small, and making life seem inanimate – the movement becomes forged like a stop-motion animation. This piece uses a tilt-shift effect to miniaturise NYC.

English born, Mark Mawson had a camera in his hand from the age of 8. After leaving school he studied photojournalism at Richmond College in Sheffield as his dream was to become a Fleet Street photographer. Following this he worked for several national daily newspapers in London including The Times, The Daily Mail and The Sunday Times until 1995 when he decided he wanted to have more creative freedom and direction over his subjects. He then moved into shooting for magazines and advertising agencies becoming well known for his celebrity portraits. In 2001 he moved to Sydney where he specializes in shooting people and fashion underwater. He has exhibited at the Roal College of Art in London and The Blender Gallery in Sydney. This work is from his series, Aqueous.

Escape Devices Fashioned By Prisoners

Marc Steinmetz has photographed prison contraband that inmates have ingeniously fabricated whilst in jail. Using a mix of home-made elements and scavenged pieces from the prison environment, prisoners have then successfully used these items to hold hostages and make daring escapes. I just wonder how the toaster came into play. More shots at Marc Steinmetz’s website.

Minakawa shoots vehicles that look as if they came straight off some deranged kabuki set. Nothing looks as if it was ever meant for anything so mundane as road transportation. Gaudy gold fins are welded to the boot of two-wheeler carts. Trucks are covered with blinding neon signs, their every surface plastered with kanji script and strobe lights. Meanwhile, the fleet of motorbikes and scooters are painted in a rainbow of glossy blues, reds and blacks; some are even adorned with stylized eyes on the fender.
