I’ve often heard models referred to as ‘clothes horses’ and often I’ve felt exactly that way about them. And on the other hand, they can inspire and at times be instrumental as an artist’s muse. In a recent unveiling of commercial beauty, Louis Vuitton released a series of mug shots of their models sans makeup, au naturel. It smells similar to the Dove Campaign for Real Beauty but on a much grander scale. In my opinion, most of the models look skewiff or just a tad bit off, but not in the good-quirky-look way. As it was put at Reddit.com, “They aren’t supposed to be attractive – they are supposed to compliment the clothing. Basically, they are living coat hangers.”

Interestingly, someone has compiled all the shots in an overlay that blends their features to produce a super-woman of sorts, I suspect, Louis Vuitton’s vision of beauty (or the perfect coat hanger). Either way, she looks young…

A study was conducted last decade where they surveyed men, showing them images of computer generated faces. The resulting winner of this beauty contest apparently had the most numerically averaged and proportionate values of facial features. Beauty or structural perfection has a geometric ratio 1: 1.6180339887. It’s the golden ratio, quite often found in nature. When applied to a face you can map the perfect face basically. The BBC did this a few years ago – Paulina Poriskova has a face that perfectly matches that ratio.

There are arguments for and against this method. One could say that beauty isn’t it found in neutrality, and it can’t be measured with numbers and it’s found in the remarkable things, like gap-teeth (hot!).

Anyhow, the geeks and nerds with technology at their finger tips will never cease to create the ultimate ideal of beauty…

Lately, technical sportswear has been featuring seamless construction and new bonding methods to assemble high-quality gear. This trend is not exclusive to apparel, New Balance has applied this science in their 574 ‘Sonic Welded’ pack, as all three shoes have been produced with minimal stitching appearing only at structural points.

The process involves using heat and pressure to meld parts together, which explains how they were able to use both mesh and nubuck without thread. Because of how they’re made, all three use a single color upper, in black, grey or brown, with the white midsole and a contrast color on the heel. Black and mint is definitely my pick. Thanks Pete!

Nike Lunar Chukka Woven

The Nike Lunar Chukka Woven is yet another of the chosen Nike shoes to be treated to the World Cup-inspired “True Colors” collection. Brazil, the Netherlands and France are all represented, similarly to the Air BW Gen II group that recently released.

There are 3 strands of DNA that make this hybrid. 1. The Chukka silhouette 2. The Lunar midsoles 3. The textile from the Woven. Basically you have black suede strips, woven together to make the uppers of all three. The midfoot and heel of each are solid of course, providing some additional support to the comfort-promising design of this Chukka. The Lunarlite soles come in either green, orange or red for the aforementioned World Cup soccer teams, respectively.

My arches dropped and I have to wear orthotics now, all because of over wearing a pair of Nike Frees. They simulate walking/running with barefeet. The problem was that my feet were not used to being barefoot and all my life relied on the support a shoe gave. Turns out they aren’t shoes at all, they’re actually midi controllers, no wonder…

Following on the heels of the Lunar Woven Chukka we saw recently, Nike are set to release another rainbow hybrid, this time combining the Air Woven with the low slung Superfly. These would surely feature on your wishlist if you missed out on the multicolor wovens from a few years back.
