Augustine Lesage through Max Hattler

Augustine Lesage was a phenomenal French artist who created giant and amazingly intricate paintings. It is said when he was 35 years old, he heard a voice from underground that said “Un jour, tu seras peintre” or “One day you will be a painter.”A year later, more voices told him which brushes and oils to buy and he ordered a large canvas to his home. Each day after, he would come back from his work at the mines and set out to work, letting the spirits guide his hand across the canvas. Undoubtedly an incredible  spiritual painter, it is hard not to believe the myth when you look closely at his work.

Max Hattler, an uber-talented video artist, has created two experimental animation loops inspired by the work of Lesage. One called ‘1923 aka Heaven’ is based on the painting ‘A symbolic composition of the spiritual world’ from 1923. The second is called ‘1925 aka Hell’ and is based on the painting ‘A symbolic composition of the spiritual world’ from 1925. Enjoy and get hypnotic
